I am 100% clueless about Disney - my last visit was in 1977 and I played no role in the planning. I don't even know where to start. We do want the Animal Kingdom to be our primary focus.... What hotel options associated with the park should we look

Hi Kerry! It is so exciting to plan another Disney vacation when you haven't been there in years. You will be shocked at the wonderful changes that have taken place in all parks and on property. With that said I know it can be a little stressful because you don't know where to begin.

Since the Animal Kingdom is a primary focus I would suggest you look into book the Animal Kingdom Lodge or Villas. From your windows you will be able to watch many African animals graze on the Savannah outside. They also have special animal programs and experts to answer questions. This is a deluxe resort so it doesn't fit into the budget then I suggest a moderate and a nearby one would be Coronado Springs.

Make sure you sign up and open a My Disney Experience account for you and the family. Then the planning begins. Decide what parks you will want to visit and what days. If you want extra magic hours check the calendar to know what days for each park they will be scheduled for. Then select some dining for those days. I suggest one table service meal per day and you can do this in a park or at a resort but it's best not to go in and out as you will waste time. Make dining reservations up to 180 days ahead. Next check out the FastPass options for each park and select your choices. If staying in a Disney resort you can make these reservations up to 60 days in advance.

These are the main steps in planning besides your tickets. You need to decide one day one park or park hopper tickets and it's a personal choice.  Fill in your plans with pool time or Disney Spring visit or water park visits. There is so much to do at Walt Disney World and you won't be able to do it all so concentrate on what your desires are first.  If you need recommendations about Animal Kingdom Park please check back with us.
