For closed loop sailings to Mexico, I see that birth certificate is good enough to board the cruise. Would I be able to roam around cities like Cabo without a passport or do I have to stay onboard?

    Hi there, Peter!

Welcome to planDisney! Thank you for asking us your question about travel documentation. I hope you love Cabo San Lucas! It is a beautiful city with many fun Port Adventures to choose from. Port Adventures are shore excursions, and options typically range from relaxing at the beach to exploring the city to adventuring in the ocean.

You are correct that an original state-issued birth certificate and a physical government-issued photo ID are currently acceptable for round trip cruises leaving from Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale, Galveston, San Diego, and San Juan. I chatted with Cast Member Caroline who said that United States citizens sailing on a round trip cruise from the United States can get off their ship in Cabo San Lucas without a passport. Yay! Guests aged 16 and older usually need their government-issued photo ID and their Key to the World or DisneyBand+ to debark and embark at ports of call. Keep in mind that documentation requirements are subject to change, and I recommend checking the Passport and Travel Documentation page for up-to-date information.

I also recommend getting a passport if your Disney Cruise is not sailing soon. Passports make it easy to board the ship, and they are helpful in the event of an unexpected situation where a Guest needs to fly out of a different country. Having a passport for every person in my family gives me peace of mind!

Peter, have a magical cruise! Do not hesitate to reach out to planDisney again if you have other questions!

    Happy sailing!
