Hi there, Tiffany!
I am truly so glad you stopped by the Disney Parks Moms Panel with your question. I have a daughter with Type 1 and know exactly the struggles and dangers your family faces each day. As you mentioned, high and low blood sugars in Type 1 Diabetics are unpredictable, dangerous and oftentimes life threatening. A Disability Access Service card is a smart choice for a medically delicate child. As you are well aware, the constant spikes and lows often come out of nowhere. You might enter the standard queue with a blood sugar of 150 but experience a dangerous low of 45 when you are about to board an attraction. This is where the DAS will help your child dramatically.
Stop by Guest Services at any of the
theme parks to state the accommodations you need for your child.
As a fellow T1D parent, can I help with some additional suggestions? The heat, adrenaline, activity (and a million other things) can affect blood sugars. Make sure you have plenty of "low snacks" on hand as well as plenty of water. Remember to test, test and test some more!
If I can help with any additional questions about traveling to
Walt Disney World with Type 1, please don't hesitate to ask. I am so happy to help. I am confidant you will have the most pixie-dusted trip, Tiffany!
Magically yours in 2018,
Jacqui
