Hello, I would like to check if my magic bands will work on my Disney cruise

    Ahoy there, Hilda Veronica!

Welcome aboard planDisney! This is a fantastic question, and you are absolutely thinking ahead like a seasoned cruise captain making sure everything is shipshape before embarkation day arrives.

Whether your current MagicBand will work onboard your Disney cruise really comes down to one important detail: is it a MagicBand+? On the Disney Cruise Line side, you’ll usually hear it called a DisneyBand+, but they’re essentially the same device. That little “plus” symbol is the magic ingredient here, a bit like needing the right key to unlock Doctor Strange’s Sling Ring portals.

There are a couple easy ways to tell if your band is compatible. First, MagicBand+ bands have lighting effects in the center puck that light up and interact during certain experiences. If the center simply stays a solid color with no lighting features, it’s likely one of the older versions that will not work onboard. Second, MagicBand+ bands are rechargeable, so if you’ve ever had to plug it in with a charging cable, that’s another great sign you have the correct version.

If you want a quick visual comparison, checking the current MagicBand+ options on the Disney Store can help you confirm what the newer versions look like.

And if it turns out you do not have a MagicBand+, no worries at all. Disney will provide you with a Key to the World card waiting at your stateroom once onboard. That card can handle nearly all the same onboard functions as a DisneyBand+, including unlocking your stateroom door, charging purchases to your onboard account, checking in for youth activities, and more.

I do want to point out one small difference, though. Certain interactive experiences onboard some ships currently require a DisneyBand+. For example, aboard the Disney Treasure and Disney Destiny, experiences like The Haunted Mansion: Happy Hunt use the DisneyBand+ as part of the gameplay and interactive effects. So while the Key to the World card covers almost everything, a DisneyBand+ can unlock a few extra magical touches onboard.

I hope this helps clear up the DisneyBand+ mystery before you set sail! It’s always nice knocking out these little planning details ahead of time so embarkation day can feel a little more relaxing and a lot more magical.

Sea ya real soon with warm air, calm seas, and a ship that always feels like home,
