Can't wait to share DW w our recently adopted 2 yo son in Sept.1st mtg w/ Easter Bunny did NOT go well! Any suggestions for how to prepare him to meet Mickey & friends? Also, any thoughts on using a kids leash in MK?He's active & doesn't sit stil

    Hi Karyn,

Congratulations on your recent adoption!  That's certainly a reason for a celebration at Walt Disney World.

As I'm sure you are now acutely aware, beloved characters like Mickey Mouse can be terrifying to small children when they are walking around, larger than life.  Do you have the planning video?  That can be a helpful tool.  Your child will have a chance to get used to the idea of going up to characters for hugs and pictures.  He'll be able to see other children happily doing it, and maybe that will help him overcome any fears.

Also, I really recommend character dining -- as long as he seems okay seeing characters from a distance.  Did your little boy get scared at the sight of the Easter Bunny, or did he just get frightened when he actually had to meet him?  If he's fine in the same room with characters, this is a great way to introduce him.  The characters will come up to your table, but they are pretty good at getting children to warm up to them.  If a child still seems uncomfortable, they will often joke around with mom & dad much to a child's amusement.

As far as using a leash, that's a judgement call that you need to make.  I've never needed to use one, but I know of people who use them in crowded areas.  If it gives you peace of mind, then I would say use one.

Hope this helps.  Have a magical vacation!

Meet the Panelist: Diane, Georgia

After spending 25 years in RI, my husband and I relocated to GA with our youngest, who is now in high school. I took my first trip to Walt Disney World when I was 11 and I have traveled many times since then with all different party sizes. From creating our first itinerary as a honeymooner to later creating magical experiences for our multigenerational family gatherings, every aspect of planning a vacation has been pure joy to me.  Learn More About Diane
