I can't decide whether Maelstrom, Star Wars and Pirates of the Carribean will scare the heck out of my 5 year old or not. He was frightened by the Haunted Mansion last year and I don't want to put him throught that experience again. Your advice please?

My son has been very timid about which rides he'll try each year. What scares one child may not even faze another kid though.

My son toured the Haunted Mansion two years ago and was terrified. He is now nearly 9 and just starting to consider going again. However, this boy will ride Space Mountain and Star Wars all day if you'd let him!

My son has always enjoyed Star Wars. The motion doesn't bother him. However he's a huge Star Wars fan so being a Jedi wannabe might have inspired him to give this ride a try.

Also he's always been okay going on Pirates of the Caribbean. Again, it might help that he finds pirates interesting. When he was younger, he would close his eyes at certain points and cover his ears but he was never frightened so much where he was unable to enjoy it.

He went on Maelstrom once. He did not like the troll and didn't appreciate when the ride vehicle went backwards. He hasn't been back on this yet. Maybe this year!

You can always try standing in the queue and if your son feels uncomfortable, ask the Cast Member to show you to the "chicken exit" before you board the ride vehicle.

Sometimes standing in line, a child will feel braver seeing other kids their size waiting happily to get on the ride. You can also point out kids that are getting off of the ride. I've also had my son ask other kids how the ride was. They seem to respect the views of their peers! This actually worked recently when my son was scared to go into Universe of Energy. Then he found out that he loved seeing the dinosaurs.

The subject matter at Haunted Mansion is scary for some kids. You'll also need to figure out if your child is scared of the dark, loud noises, and/or certain motions.

A great strategy that I use is to show my son actual video of the ride experience. You can search on YouTube for footage and experience the attraction from the safety of your home first!
