We had to cancel our trip last March and are now going this March. We had bought tickets and magicbands already. One of my son’s cannot go this year so we’re bringing a friend. Can the friend use the unused, but linked, magicband?

Hey there, Staci. Thanks for stopping by planDisney with your question.

I'm really sorry you had to cancel your trip to the Most Magical Place on Earth last year. My family and I were actually at Walt Disney World right before everything got shut down celebrating my daughter's birthday. It sure was a crazy time. I am happy to see that you've rescheduled your trip. While things may look a bit differently at Walt Disney World right now, I know you are going to have a great time.

Unfortunately, at this time, there isn't a way to unlink a MagicBand from one person and reassign it to another. You can deactivate a MagicBand but it will be forever linked to the original owner. No worries though, you have a couple of options. The first would be to purchase a MagicBand for your friend when you arrive. You'll find MagicBands for sale at most of the shops at Walt Disney World Resort Hotels and at the Walt Disney World Theme Parks. Once you've purchased the MagicBand, it's very easy to link it to the friend's MyDisneyExperience account using the mobile app.
    • Sign in to the user's MyDisneyExperience account on a mobile device.
    • Click the menu icon at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. It should look like 3 horizontal lines
    • Scroll down to "Link to Account" and select that option
    • Click "Link Magic Band or Card"
    • Enter the ID Code
It's a super quick process that will have your friend scanning into the Walt Disney World Theme Parks in no time. If your friend doesn't want to purchase a MagicBand, however, they can absolutely use their theme park admission card to scan into the parks as well. If you don't have a card, you can get one of these at the ticket booths located at the entrance of each park or Guest Services will be able to help you out. Another idea I had is to talk to someone at the front desk of your resort when you arrive. Explain the situation and that there wasn't another opportunity to add another MagicBand on for your friend who is now coming. They may be able to work some magic for you and provide you with a complimentary MagicBand for your friend. When I've had some trouble with a band before, I was given a grey band as a replacement which I believe they keep a stack of for in case of emergency type of things. It may not be the most colorful but at least it is something. I wouldn't count on that 100%, but it certainly doesn't hurt to ask.

I hope this helps, Staci. If you have any other questions before your trip, please feel free to come back and ask. Have fun!

Meet the Panelist: Jackie, North Carolina

I love all things Walt Disney World.  In fact, since becoming Annual Passholders, my family of 3 is always hopping in the car for a quick trip to visit with Mickey Mouse!  I've been known to make the 8 hour each way drive to Walt Disney World (in one day!) to indulge in a Mickey Waffle or enjoy a sunny day at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon Water Park.  I may have a small family, but we are always up for some BIG fun at the Walt Disney World Resort.   Learn More About Jackie
