Do the buses run between resorts? or just from resorts to parks? if you have dinner reservations at a resort other than where you are staying how do you get back to yours afterwards? thanks obviously Ive never used transportation system there before

Buses do not run directly between the Walt Disney World resorts. For instance, if you are traveling from Pop Century to the Grand Floridian, you would need to transfer at a convenient hub. In that specific case, I would take a bus to the Magic Kingdom and then transfer to a boat or the resort monorail for travel to the Grand Floridian.

Afterwards, you would travel in reverse. Monorail to the Magic Kingdom, then bus to the Pop Century Resort.

The hubs are the theme parks as well as Downtown Disney.

You should allow about one hour for traveling between resorts unless they are close to each other such as the resorts on the monorail line (Grand Floridian, Contemporary/Bay Lake Tower and Polynesian).
