I am brining my 2 grandsons to WDW in September. Both are on the autism spectrum, but are high functioning. My younger one will not ride the faster rides. What can I do with him while his brother and I are on the faster rides?

    Hi Patti,

I'm so excited to hear of your vacation this fall! As a mom of a child on the autism spectrum, I can tell you that I've found the Walt Disney World Resort to be a magical vacation destination for everyone! You'll be pleased to learn that there are some great planning resources available for families traveling with Guests who have special needs. I've found them to be super helpful!

The short answer to your question is that it all depends on his age and comfort level. Guests under the age of 14 are supposed to be supervised by a Guest age 14 or older, so if he's still young, you'll need to stay with him in the theme parks. There are some great options for childcare services if you'd like to plan for a few hours of time where you may enjoy some more thrilling attractions with your older grandson. If he's 14 or older and would be comfortable being left alone while you are on an attraction, he could enjoy a more peaceful attraction or an entertaining show by himself, or find a bench to enjoy watching the surroundings while he waits for you. You certainly know your grandson best.

I'd encourage you to stop by Guest Relations when you first arrive at the theme parks. The Cast Members there are a great resource and can help point out some quiet locations if your grandsons need a sensory break, and they can also help share some services designed to help Guests with special needs feel comfortable in the parks.

I hope you and your grandsons have a truly magical vacation, Patti, and please let us know if we can answer any more questions for you!
