We are bringing our 7 year old Son to DisneyWorld for the first time. He is autistic and the closer our vacation gets, the more nervous I am that he will be able to handle it. How have other parents navigated Disney with autism?

    Hi Laurie,

Other parents have had great success visiting Walt Disney World with children diagnosed with autism.  A few years ago we took my nephew, and had such a great time that his parents have since traveled back to Walt Disney World for family vacations at least 2 other times.  The key is to take things slow and to read your child's cues.  When he has had enough, it's time to take a break.  Don't try to push the limits.  Also, try to keep things as normal as possible as far as your daily routine is concerned.

I recommend going to Guest Services and getting a Guest Assistance Card before you enter the park.  It may not get you into attractions faster, but cast members will give you an alternate place to wait that is less crowded or chaotic.  Make sure you take a break in the middle of the day.  There is a lot of stimulation, and your child needs time to process everything he's seen/heard.

Hope this helps.  Have a magical vacation!

Meet the Panelist: Diane, Georgia

After spending 25 years in RI, my husband and I relocated to GA with our youngest, who is now in high school. I took my first trip to Walt Disney World when I was 11 and I have traveled many times since then with all different party sizes. From creating our first itinerary as a honeymooner to later creating magical experiences for our multigenerational family gatherings, every aspect of planning a vacation has been pure joy to me.  Learn More About Diane
