Welcome, Valarie!
As Christopher Robin says to his friend Winnie the Pooh, “tut tut, it looks like rain!” Never fear, I like to say a rainy day at the
Walt Disney World Resort is better than a sunny day at home. Some of my best theme park days have been rainy ones, so I’m happy to share what’s possible. Thank you for bringing a thoughtful question about umbrellas, it’s better to be safe and confirm than to bring something to a theme park that isn’t allowed.
I’m glad to share that
yes, you may bring an umbrella into a Walt Disney World theme park, Resort Collection Hotel, and restaurants on property. I usually carry a small backpack as my theme park bag and use one exterior pocket for a water bottle and the other one for an umbrella. Sporadic rain showers are very common in Central Florida and can often be a welcome way to help cool down on a warm day. While umbrellas are not on the list of
prohibited items at the Walt Disney World Resort, please keep practicality and comfort in mind. I advise a smaller umbrella that will fit in your bag for when the sun decides to come out again. Anything too large will be cumbersome for any attraction vehicles and may be considered dangerous to other Guests if not stored properly. Please note that you may be asked to hold your umbrella, folded, out in front of you when passing through the security scanners but they are still allowed into the parks.
My family likes to wear our raincoats with a hood, hats, or ponchos when the rain threatens our practically perfect park day. I find these will often protect us enough from the weather and then have an umbrella in case of bright afternoon sun or torrential rain when moving across the property unprotected.
I’m glad you are thinking ahead about how to manage the weather rather than changing plans, Valarie. When the rain comes, many Guests leave the theme parks quickly which results in shorter wait times for your family! If you are prepared and have a positive attitude, you can have a magical day with most attractions still running and many indoor opportunities to stay dry and continue to explore all the theme parks have to offer. A rainstorm is a perfect time to catch a show such as
“Festival of the Lion King” at
Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park or
“Mickey’s Philharmagic” at
Magic Kingdom Park. Stay safe, but certainly keep enjoying your day and making those special memories together!
Please let us know if you have any other questions to enhance your magical trip, we’re here to help.
Stay dry,
Amy
