Hi Adrienne,
I just purchased some Disney Gift Cards online through Costco, too so I’m happy you came by with this question. I love to use these at the Walt Disney World Resort – I find it’s a great way to spread out my expenses by purchasing the gift cards in advance and using them once on vacation. I did some experimenting today and am happy to share what I discovered with you for using these Costco-purchased Disney Gift Cards digitally.
You’re correct in that there is no “Add to Apple Wallet” icon available with the delivery of these particular eGifts when purchased online at Costco. When you open the email (from “Costco e-Delivery Code”) and click on “View Digital Card” it takes you to a website to access the eGift. For each card purchased, you’ll see the barcode, Account Number, and EAN. There are further instructions for use presented, but you may print the page or use the digital image for Cast Members to scan the barcode at Walt Disney World. You may also present this information at your Disney Resorts Collection hotel and apply the value to your room folio any time before the last night of your stay; this will pay down any balance before your credit card on file is charged.
I did successfully add the value of my Costco-purchased Disney Gift Cards to my Apple Wallet using a creative workaround from my fellow panelist, Aena. While you can use the methods described above to present the barcode during transactions, I understand the ease of use with Apple Wallet.
Here’s what I did:
- Logged in using my Disney account to Disneygiftcard.com
- Added the Costco gift cards using the Account Number and EAN for each one
- Purchased a new Disney eGift Card on shopDisney.com (I opted for the minimum $25 for this use)
- Received an email with the shopDisney-purchased Disney eGift Card, and then added that as a new gift card to my collection on Disneygiftcard.com using the Account Number and EAN
- Transferred the balance of my two cards from Costco to the new shopDisney gift card in my collection, using the intuitive “Transfer Funds to this Card” button in my list of cards on Disneygiftcard.com
- Opened the email on my phone from shopDisney with that gift card delivery. From that email, I clicked the “Add to Apple Wallet” icon and successfully added that card to my Apple Wallet. Hooray!
I suggest labelling each card clearly during this process to stay organized online. Note that the “starting balance” in my Apple Wallet read as $25.00, the original amount purchased. I checked the balance per the instructions and saw the full amount as I had transferred the value from my Costco cards. Anytime I use this gift card at Walt Disney World, I can see the balance of my gift card on the receipt or check the website again to confirm what remains.
While I purchased a new gift card on shopDisney.com for this test, you can repeat this process with any Disney eGift card you already have, Adrienne. I've added Disney eGift cards to my Apple Wallet in the past, so I was surprised like you to not see the icon in my Costco email delivery. I hope this workaround helps you streamline the use of these great cards.
Please let us know how else we can help you make the most of this wonderful vacation. Thanks for your great question – I learned something new today and will be using my new gift cards in my Apple Wallet on my next visit, too!
Wishing you a magical trip,
Amy
