Greetings, Tina, and welcome to planDisney! While three days at the Disneyland Resort is so much fun, there's definitely something special about having a
Magic Key pass that unlocks a whole year of opportunities! I have family members who were in the same position as you, and I'm happy to help you think through the next steps.
So, you have a
CA Resident Park Hopper Ticket, which can be used for admission on three separate days (with a valid reservation) through May 21, 2026. The ticket doesn't have to be used on consecutive dates, and it is possible to
upgrade it to a Magic Key pass.
Your plan to upgrade on the third day of use is a good one (as long as you do it before the end of that day), but let's go over some factors you may want to keep in mind as you plan it out:
- To avoid losing existing reservations, many Guests choose to upgrade their ticket before they leave the park on the final day of use. Just make sure to upgrade before the clock strikes midnight on that last visit. After that, the ticket would be considered fully used, and you wouldn't be able to upgrade.
- The Magic Key pass would date back to the first day you used your ticket. It's something to keep in mind if there will be a gap between when you first use this ticket and when you upgrade.
- You can check the Magic Key Calendar to see if reservations are available for the Magic Key you're interested in. If there are, you could upgrade and rebook your reservations, assuming availability doesn't change during that time.
- The Magic Key pass you're interested in must still be available for purchase in order to upgrade. There could be a chance of the passes becoming unavailable, especially if you aren't going to visit and upgrade until closer to mid-May. We don't know if and when sales will pause, so it's something to be aware of.
What my family members did, and I think it's a good approach if you plan to upgrade, is plan all three days within a few weeks of each other, and consider going on days
when the Magic Key passes are blocked for maximum value. Then, upgrade on the last day as you're leaving the park. If their visits weren't for another month or two, then I might suggest upgrading and just rebooking the reservations, even if that means changing the planned dates, to secure the Magic Key pass. Ultimately, the path you take will depend on your existing plans and preferences.
I love being a Magic Key holder for so many reasons. At the top of the list, it's really nice being able to visit the Happiest Place on Earth at different times during the year. Each season seems to offer something exciting and special, so it's fun having the opportunity to make a reservation and experience it. The discounts at select dining and merchandise locations, the ability to park hop, and
exclusive extras offered periodically are like an extra sprinkle of pixie dust. Plus, you'll have the opportunity to dine at
Magic Key Terrace, which is home to one of my favorite meals at the entire Resort.
Tina, if you think of any other questions about your current ticket or becoming a Magic Key holder, please reach out – we're always happy to help here at planDisney!
