I just booked a vacation to Disney World this summer for when my husband returns from deployment. I know they have VIPs for the Parades or opening the parks. My question is there a way to book this or is picked by random?

Welcome to the Moms Panel Colleen!

First, let me offer my sincere thanks for your husband's service to our country. It is men and women like him that allow us to sleep at night knowing our country is safe. Second, let me thank you. Spouses of our service men and women play an important role too.

Typically, Guests are chosen at random to open parks or be in parades. There are times when they may have a celebrity VIP in the park that they ask to be the Grand Marshall for the parades but usually its Guests that were lucky enough to be showered in pixie dust.

If you want to increase your chances of being selected I would plan to arrive at the turnstiles early. Show your enthusiasm by wearing ears or matching shirts. Smile big and be talkative and friendly to the Cast Members. Your husband may want to wear something indicating he is in the military. Pick up "I'm Celebrating" buttons for both of you. If you're staying on property, you can ask for them when you check in or pick them up at any theme park Guest Relations location.  In other words, draw some attention (in a positive way) to yourself.

The Flag Retreat at the Magic Kingdom is something that your husband may enjoy and Guests can participate. Click here to read a great article on the Disney Parks Blog regarding it. When you first get to Magic Kingdom, visit Guest Relations and ask if anyone has been selected to participate that day.  If not, he may be able to participate in the ceremony.  Its typically held at 5:00 p.m. but be sure to check the Times Guide when you arrive at the park.

I will keep my fingers crossed for you!  Wishing you minnie magical memories :-)  Allison
