Hello, we have booked onto a Disney cruise to Alaska from 11th to 18th August departing in Vancouver. If we are planning to fly out on debarkation day when would you recommend the earliest time we could book would be from this port?

Saijalben, you are in for a treat! The Disney Cruise Line adventure in Alaska is one of my favorite vacations ever. It was described to me as an "American Safari," and it lived up to that description. It really is a Wonder at sea.

I am glad you came to planDisney with this question, even if it means planning for the day Mickey says, "SEA 'ya real soon!" Disney recommends scheduling flights from Vancouver International Airport at 1 p.m. or later. Our flight was around 1:30 p.m., and we hoped to grab lunch at the airport. Unfortunately, we arrived at the same time as a few other cruise line buses. Getting through bag drop, security and passport control, we barely had time to grab food for the flight. We were not concerned about making our flight in time, but we did not have the cushion we expected.

So now that we have discussed the time after the cruise, let's talk about the adventure on board! My biggest dream was to see whales, and we booked a whale-watching excursion in Juneau. We also loved the White Pass Railway in Skagway. In Ketchikan, we saved time to wander and explore the area. It was a good call! It was such an idyllic town.

Also, be sure to check the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app for lectures by naturalists on board. I know, I know, a lecture does not sound like a dreamy vacation, but they were incredible! I learned about whales and how they create bubble cyclones to catch dinner. I also learned that whales have their own "song of summer" specific to the year and the ocean. Fascinating! It made the experiences so much richer.

And my dream of watching whales was fulfilled. We saw humpback whales in Juneau and spotted several pods of orcas while sitting on the verandah. I could talk forever about the uniqueness of this land, this cruise, and the overall experience.

Saijalben, I hope you find your cruise just as magical. If the only complaint is that too many people are at the airport to get a table-service meal before boarding, life is good. If we can help with any other questions or recommendations, please come see us again at planDisney. We're here for you!

    SEAS the day!
