I just booked a last-minute trip to Disney World! Will be traveling with husband and two boys, 6 and 8. 10/14 is my birthday, and it seems most places I'm interested in dining that evening are booked. Suggestions for a fun birthday celebration?

    Amy:

Let me recommend that you head to a restaurant that will be as fun for your boys as it is for you to celebrate. Two suggestions where you can oftentimes get a standby table are Rainforest Cafe and T-Rex. Both feature what I call "animaltronics"-- animals that move much like the presidents in the Hall of Presidents at the Magic Kingdom. Whether its gorillas or dinosaurs, both restaurants come to life for kids and adults. Best of all the meal won't leave you feeling like you need to take out a loan.  When it comes to the menu, I prefer T-Rex. Its mushroom ravioli and flatbread are some of the best dishes on Disney property, in my opinion. What takes the cake (no pun intended) is its Chocolate Extinction, a brownie sundae for four that makes a memorable celebration dessert--perfect for a birthday.

Another option is to book a table at the new Splitsville Luxury Lanes in Downtown Disney. Enjoy pizza, burgers, even sushi, while you bowl. It's not your usual bowling alley, and again, will be as memorable for the boys as for you. Finish off the evening with a stroll over to Ghirardelli to splurge on its Earthquake Family Favorite, 8 scoops of ice cream with loads of toppings.

    Wishing y'all a magical vacation!

My family of 6 appreciates Disney's value! Although Ft. Wilderness is our second home, we've enjoyed the resorts for business, reunions and romantic getaways. For me, Disney also means dining: last count, I'd eaten at 55 restaurants around the World! Learn More About Whitney
