Should I book character dining before we go on our vacation, or should I wait until we actually reach Disney? I am not sure when we will be at certain parks because we are only going for 4 days. Thanks for any help you can provide.

You should absolutely reserve any character meals you hope to do as early as possible, Katharine.  Breakfasts, lunches, and dinners with Disney's most famous faces book up incredibly quickly, often times leaving walk-up diners out of luck.  My recommendation to you would be to choose one or two must do character meals and make arrangements in your schedule that will allow for you to make the reservation, assuming, of course, that character meals are an important part of your trip.  If, on the other hand, you can take or leave them, then you certainly can be more flexible and attempt a last minute reservation or walk-up seating.  I hope that helps!
