Jodi from MD Asked Note: This answer was provided prior to the change to planDisney and may still contain references to Disney Parks Moms Panel.

hello Betsy, My Family of 4 is planning our trip for this upcoming summer and have a few questions … Our 12 year old son loves avatar but is afraid of the dark. any thoughts on the rides for him in that area or should we just skip the whole area.

Hi there Jodi! Welcome back to the Disney Parks Moms Panel. We're so glad you're back with more planning questions; we love to help!

How exciting that your family has a trip scheduled for this summer at the Most Magical Place on Earth. We love the summer at Walt Disney World; the energy and excitement of children and families enjoying school break together is fantastic.

The addition of Pandora - The World of Avatar has completely changed how I visit Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park. My family now visits this theme park multiple times per trip so we can experience everything this new land has to offer both during the day and at night. The unique attractions, immersive scenery, and innovative cuisine are not-to-be missed! Since Avatar is a favorite film in your house, your family will surely be delighted with your visit.

I also have a child that is sensitive to dark spaces, and we have successfully explored the planet of Pandora. Avatar Flight of Passage is my favorite attraction in all of Walt Disney World, and while the lights are turned out once you have mounted your banshee, the screen illuminates the surrounding area. If your son has successfully experienced Soarin' Around the World in EPCOT, I think he will be fine on this attraction. This ride is extremely popular, so I recommend reserving your banshee flight in advance with FastPass+, or making it your first stop as soon as the park opens.

The other headliner attraction in Pandora - The World of Avatar is the Na'vi River Journey. This slow-moving river cruise through the mystical landscape of Pandora does take place in the dark, but is brightened by the bioluminescent plant life of the woods. My daughter was initially frightened upon boarding our river boats in a darkened area, but became calm once we moved into the captivating forest scenes. For comparisons sake, this attraction is much lighter than the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean, but is darker than "it's a small world."

No matter what attractions you decide to experience during your visit, I highly recommend a meal or snack at Satu'li Canteen. My children love the Cheeseburger Steamed Pods (they are cute AND delicious!), while my husband and I enjoy creating our own bowls. If anyone in your party maintains a meat-free diet, there are some delicious plant-based offerings here as well. The Chili-Spiced Crispy Fried Tofu Bowl is delightful!

I hope this helps give you and your son some ideas on what will make him most comfortable during your upcoming visit. If we can do anything else for you before your vacation, please come back and see us again.

    TTFN, ta ta for now!
