Welcome aboard planDisney! Trying to find the right Disney ship is definitely a little like finding Cinderella’s glass slipper. You want to make sure it fits you and your crew just right, so let’s see if we can narrow down the choices for your 3-year-old captain!
The great news for you and your son is that there really is no wrong choice when it comes to
finding a ship with his favorite classic Disney pals. Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, and Goofy are big fans of the high seas and tend to be found across the fleet. Even our pals Chip and Dale leave their tree behind to spend some time on the water. Of course, they have busy schedules of their own, so I can’t guarantee which characters will appear on a particular sailing, but you’ll have plenty of opportunities to see some familiar Disney faces.
I know that probably doesn’t help much with narrowing down your ship choice, so let’s dive a little deeper! My recommendation would be to start with the itinerary that best matches what you and your family want to experience. If visiting both
Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay is high on your wish list, for example, look for a sailing that includes both destinations during the dates you’re available. The number of nights you want to sail can help narrow things down, too. The
Disney Cruise Line website has several filters that make it much easier to find the sailing that fits your family.
If you’re flexible on the itinerary, then I’d shift the focus to the features of the ships themselves. Each class has its own personality, and I’ve seen that firsthand with my own kids. They loved playing in the
Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab on the Disney Magic, Dream, and Fantasy, but they were not big fans of the Oceaneer Club on the Wish Class ships (Wish, Treasure, and Destiny). On the other hand, they really enjoyed the
Hero Zone and
Mickey & Friends Festival of Foods on the Wish Class. So, for us, it became a bit of a tradeoff based on what mattered most to them.
Personally, I wouldn't feel like you need to find a single “best” ship for a classic-character-loving
3-year-old. I’d let your family’s preferred itinerary, sailing length, and the features that matter most to your son do the heavy lifting. Mickey and his friends will be right at home on the high seas, so whichever ship you choose, your little guy should have plenty of opportunities to see some familiar faces.
