    what is the best way to find out what is happening in the parks and when there are special events that might affect park hours or activities?

    I consider the Disney Parks Blog the best resource for any updates regarding the Walt Disney World Resort. They announce special events, new attractions and activities, and bring daily updated information.
    There are also two websites I like to visit for updates, easywdw.com and touringplans.com. They are constantly updating their calendars according to any Disney news.
