Best excursion from St Thomas port day to St John?

Why hello there Courtney, thank you for sailing in to planDisney for a bit of nautical knowledge!

I've certainly spent a lot of time in and around the Caribbean Ports of Call since I first began working on Disney Cruise Line over a decade ago, and being in Entertainment meant that we had more privileges than a lot of the crew to head off and enjoy the Port Adventures! Since St. Thomas has always been a very popular destination for Eastern Caribbean cruises, I definitely have some island insight to help you decide on what you might want to do in St. John as you venture into the U.S. Virgin‎ Islands!

    • Many of the Port Adventures found in St. Thomas might sail by to offer you a glimpse of St. John but won't actually let you alight on its shores; this often meant that it felt extra exclusive and not quite as crowded whenever we were there. The feeling of exploring some of that lush, tropical island on an Eco-Hike is something that you might enjoy for a change of pace from a beach day, just for the sense of adventure and chance to spot some wildlife. (Speaking of the wildlife, I very highly recommend packing some insect repellent - the mosquitos can be quite voracious!)
    • The added benefit of heading to St. John with fewer fellow tourists in tow is that the beaches can often seem so much more pristine and private, and if you're thinking of heading to Trunk Bay this is where many cruising folks choose to spend their day. I took my first scuba diving lessons in the U.S. Virgin‎ Islands and this was also where I've experienced some of the best underwater sights outside of the Pacific in these clear waters, so packing a snorkel or heading on a dedicated snorkel excursion to drift along a beautiful underwater trail is something I definitely suggest!
    • There are definitely other beaches on the island that may feel more secluded so if you're set on heading to destinations like Cinnamon Bay or Honeymoon Bay to explore St. John On Your Own, just be aware that it can sometimes take additional time finding a taxi to take you back to Cruz Bay so give yourself some extra wiggle room! (There can also be an additional fee to access certain spots like Trunk Bay, so be prepared and confirm ahead before driving off to your beach destination.)

Since this does often take an additional journey from the Cruise Pier at Havensight Mall, being on a Port Adventure is a great way to have some reassurance that you'll be back by the scheduled All-aboard time. (It is however, always a good idea to confirm with the Crew Members when you debark and check the postage signage on the way out.) If you're not chartering a private boat for the day, you'll very likely be taking the ferry out of Charlotte Amalie which is might not be for the faint of stomach - so taking preventative measures will be key before embarking on that 45-minute ride!

Here's to all your upcoming adventures in St. John!
