Another beginner question on the Tower of Terror 10 miler! My sister suggested I run a timed race b/n now and Sept. so that I can get in a time corral. My goal is < 120 min (12 min/mile). Is a corral worth it at that pace? What races qualify? Thanks

    Hi Katie!

You can run any race that is a 10K (6 miles) or higher to get an official time.  You can submit that time at the packet pick-up if you want to get a higher corral.  You would do this at the "runners relations" booth at the expo.  They can give you a sticker for your bib to move you up if you are in a lower corral.

I have mixed feelings about corrals.  Most people think it is hard to wait around while the other corrals start, and this can be true.  However, I also sort of like the "lower pressure" corrals.  The first two corrals are generally your faster runners.  Since I use the run/walk method, the fast runners don't always appreciate when I stop on my walk breaks even though it is still in the first mile!  I run at about a 10 min/mile pace, but this includes a walk break after every 4 minutes.  So, being in the later corrals, I can usually get in front of more of the runners and since most of them are using a run/walk method too, there isn't any pressure to skip my walk break and keep running.  One of the most important things about distance races, is to run YOUR race.

So, you do what you think you would feel best with.  Keep in mind that your time will begin when you cross the start line because of the chip timer on your bib.

I hope this helps you!  Please let me know if you have any other questions!
