Is the beach area at Castaway near the new Mickey and Minnie Cabanas wide open ocean, as opposed to the enclosed lagoon near the ship? We are planning our day and wanted to run the 5K and then go back to the ship for Mickey Churro waffles-but, waves?

    Hey, howdy, hey, Michele!

You're back! I'm so happy to hear from you again here at planDisney. It's simultaneously humbling and gratifying that you have found our advice and support helpful enough to be worth your time to allow us the privilege of sharing in your Disney vacation planning again.

This is such a great question, Michele. You are right, the family cabanas located at Mickey and Minnie Cove on Disney Castaway Cay are situated on a stretch of gorgeous Bahamian beach that faces the open sea of the island's west coast. But does that mean that there are excessively strong waves on that side of the island? Not necessarily. It seems that the smart minds from Walt Disney Imagineering did a great job of understanding the beauties and qualities of the natural surroundings of the lovely Bahamian islands that host Castaway Cay and Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point when they designed them. It turns out the west side of Castaway Cay is the island's leeward side. In other words, the prevailing winds in that area of the Bahamas tend to blow against the island's windward side on the east, leaving the leeward side on the west largely protected from the wind's effects by the island itself.

That means that the ocean waves on the leeward side of the island tend to be quite gentle. It seems that Serenity Bay, the adult-exclusive area just to the north of Mickey and Minnie Cove, is very appropriately named! Based on my personal experience of lazily enjoying the ocean over there, the water is usually very calm and relaxing, even though the area is not surrounded by breakwaters like those around the perimeter of the lagoon on the island's south side. Of course, weather conditions could vary. But most of the time, Guests of Castaway Cay are likely to enjoy phenomenal swimming and recreation conditions no matter which Guest-accessible beach they choose to enjoy.

It sounds like you have a busy time planned during your visit to Disney's first private tropical paradise. I'm so very proud of my Castaway Cay 5K medal. Even through the excitement of earning that illustrious prize, I hope you take some time to enjoy the natural beauty of the island before, during, and after the race. And I believe that a treat like a Churro Mickey Waffle is the perfect way to celebrate such a win!

    Have a magical cruise, Michele!
