Whats the average amount of currency a standard tourist should partake in an experience such as this.

Hi Roger!  Disney Dollars are a fun currency system that is used at Walt Disney World, Disneyland and Disney Stores.  The trade value is dollar per dollar and is sold in denominations of $1, $5, and $10.  It adds a little touch of magic when you see those iconic characters nestled in your wallet, but it is not a requirement that you use them while visiting.  Disney Dollars can be purchased at Guest Relations or your Disney Resort's frontdesk or concierge. I normally pick them up at Guest Relations because the resorts typically have a limited stock.  They can also be ordered before you trip, but you will be charged a shipping and handling fee to have them mailed to you.
Typically when I am visiting the parks I only purchase around $30 worth because I use my room charge for most of my needs.  My kids love receiving these and they can spend them however they see fit.  These also make a wonderful souvenir of your vacation.  If you should purchase more than you actually need, just hope over to Guest Relations at any of the 4 parks or Downtown Disney to have your Disney Dollars exchanged for regular currency.  Just be sure that none of the dollars have been signed by any of the characters because it officially becomes a souvenir at that point.  Please let us know if you have anymore questions!
