I have a 5yo autistic son who completely ignores strangers. Is there something akin to the blue pumpkins for Halloween, like possibly a color coded button, to indicate he isn't being rude he just is not capable of responding?

Hi, April!  It's always a pleasure to help a fellow Pennsylvanian here at planDisney!

Like you, I'm also the mom of a kiddo on the autism spectrum.  My son, who is now a teenager, has been visiting Walt Disney World Resort since he was around your little one's age.  My family returns to Walt Disney World Resort year after year because we always feel welcome there.  The Cast Members truly go above and beyond to make the magic accessible to everyone.

Over the years, I have gotten better at not worrying about what strangers might think when my son exhibits behaviors that are outside of the norm.  That being said, I certainly understand your concerns.  I don't personally know of any color-coded button to indicate that someone has autism.  However, an internet search could probably help you find some type of autism awareness merchandise that your son could wear in the theme parks if this would help you to feel more at ease.

As you get ready for your trip, I recommend looking over the Services for Guests with Disabilities page on the Walt Disney World Resort website.  This will help familiarize you with accommodations such as Disability Access Service (DAS) that are offered to assist Guests with special needs.  You might also find this Guide for Guests with Cognitive Disabilities helpful.  Also, if you'd like some information about visiting Walt Disney World Resort with a preschooler, be sure to take a look at the planDisney Video Library.  My fellow panelists, Leslie and LeAndra have a super informative series of videos on visiting with little ones.

April, if you have any other questions as you're getting ready for your trip, please don't hesitate to ask.  We'd love to help you and your son have the most magical vacation ever!  See ya real soon!
