Am I allowed to bring my Shark FlexStyle on the Wish? Its 120V/1600W. It appears its allowed per the restricted items list, but I wanted to as since I've heard mixed opinions.

    Hi there, Stephanie,

One of the things that my family likes the most about sailing with the Disney Cruise Line is how much it feels like home to us. It's not literally home, of course. But the cast and crew make us feel so at ease and welcome that we genuinely have a sense of belonging that just feels homey. On top of that, it's very nice if we can bring along some familiar comforts from home as well. So I understand wanting to bring along your regular set of hairstyling equipment and other personal amenities.

It's great that you are checking on the requirements and limitations related to personal appliances allowed on board. It's better to avoid surprises when you get to the port on embarkation day. Here is the information for the types of appliances that are allowed on board:

    • Baby monitors, humidifiers, sleep machines, and white noise machines may be allowed, but require individual inspection to assure safety.
    • Hair dryers that use a higher voltage (about 220V) may not have a peak wattage that exceeds 2000 watts
    • Hair dryers that use a lower voltage (about 110V) may not have a peak wattage that exceeds 1500 watts.
    • Curling irons, flat irons, and similar devices may be allowed, but must be used with a protective mat that your stateroom host can provide for your use.
    • Electric shavers are generally permitted

In all cases, appliances and devices are subject to inspection to verify safety compliance. Our family took a portable humidifier on one of our sailings aboard the Disney Wonder. It needed to be temporarily confiscated for inspection. After it was verified to be safe for use on board, we were able to retrieve it from Guest Services on the ship and make use of it for the duration of our cruise. One of my friends packed a certain type of hair dryer that, unfortunately, had a higher peak wattage than could safely operate on the ship. The device was confiscated for the duration of her cruise. Although she would have preferred using her own device, she was able to make do with the capable hair dryer provided in each stateroom.

For your specific case, I would recommend having a backup option available. As a hair dryer, it seems the Shark FlexStyle would exceed the 1500-watt limit. Individual inspections are up to the professional discretion of the crew members who make determinations for the safety of all passengers and crew on your ship.

Thanks for your question, Stephanie. If there's anything else we can help with as you plan for your cruise, we'd love to hear from you again here at planDisney.
