Ahoy, Bridget! Welcome to planDisney, where we are ready and waiting to answer all of your questions about where magic meets the sea. I am also setting sail aboard the
Disney Wonder this summer, so I understand your excitement and desire to make sure that you are well prepared for your Alaskan adventure.
Temperatures in Alaska can vary widely, so layers are going to be your best bet for making sure that you are ready for anything. Although July is typically the warmest month in Alaska, keep in mind that you will be docking along the coast where average temperatures are generally cooler than they are inland and will commonly fall somewhere in the 50s or 60s. I recommend packing a variety of options, including a few short-sleeved tees, long-sleeved tops, and at least a sweater or two, so that you can adjust as you travel from port to port. Since rain and wind are also common, you will want to make sure that you have some type of waterproof and windproof coat to keep you warm, as well as a hat, scarf, and gloves on hand for certain excursions. Be sure to check out the official
Disney Cruise Line packing lists for more recommendations.
As for the special events on board, you will be “Freezing the Night Away with Anna, Elsa, and Friends” at the
Frozen Deck Party, which is only available aboard select Disney Wonder sailings. Feel free to bring your favorite Frozen gear or whatever else makes you feel like a happy snowman just like Olaf. There will be plenty of singing and dancing, but please note that there are no fireworks on Alaskan itineraries.
Sometimes people hear Alaska and think it’s going to be freezing, but the Alaskan itineraries are scheduled in the summer for a reason! No offense to Captain Minnie, but I’m pretty sure that her fur-lined parka is a fashion choice and not an actual necessity. A big part of your packing decisions are going to be based on your own point of reference for what cold means to you; however, having lived in Ohio myself for a few years, I can assure you that summer in Alaska is nothing close to winter in Ohio. As long as you pack different options for layering, you should be perfectly fine. Also, don’t forget that
24-hour self-service laundry facilities are available on board, so there is no need to over pack.
Keep counting down those days until July and get ready to embark on an unforgettable adventure to the wild wonders of Alaska. Happy sailing!
