Hi Megan!
Animal Kingdom now has a program along those lines called the Wilderness Explorers. I recently tried it with my oldest son and we loved it.
To begin, stop by the Wilderness Explorers Headquarters just after you cross the main bridge entering the park, pick up a Wilderness Explorer Handbook from a Troop Leader and pledge to uphold the Wilderness Explorers Motto "A Wilderness Explorer is a friend to all, be it plants or fish or tiny mole". I always think of Russell from "Up" when I hear that motto.
There are additional starting locations on Discovery Island, in Africa, Rafiki's Planet Watch, Asia and Dinoland, U.S.A. The locations are marked on the Animal Kingdom Guide Map.
Once you have your Wilderness Explorer Handbook, follow the 3 easy steps to exploring:
1. Find the Badge location using the map found on pages 4 & 5.
2. Follow the instructions on each page to complete the activity.
3. Find the Troop Leader or Badge Guide to earn the Badge.
There are currently 31 Badges and different ranks you can earn:
5 Badges = Tadpole
10 Badges = Minnow
20 Badges = Fish
31 Badges = Senior Wilderness Explorer
If you don't complete all of the Badges on your visit, you can bring your book back on your next visit to continue exploring and earning additional Badges. This experience is included in the cost of admission. Its a great activity that kids of all ages and abilities can participate in. I even learned some interesting facts along the way.
The Disney Parks Blog just featured an article about Wilderness Explorers with a really cute video of some kids becoming Wilderness Explorers. Remember "The Wilderness Must Be Explored"!
Wishing you minnie magical memories :-) Allison V.
