Am I able up upgrad my entrance ticket Genie passes if I’m not staying at the resort

Hi Juli! Welcome to planDisney, fellow New Jersey native. Let's get this question answered!

Theme park tickets and the Disney Genie+ Service are 2 separate purchases. Theme park tickets get you into the theme parks and the Disney Genie+ Service allows you to reserve shorter wait times in the Lightning Lane at included attractions, one at a time, throughout the day. This service can be purchased by anyone visiting the parks for each day that they'd like to purchase it. It goes on sale at 12 a.m. midnight each morning. While you likely don't have to purchase it that early, you'll want to ensure that you do so by 7 a.m. as, currently, that is the time you can book your first Lightning Lane reservation. Just note that this service can sell out.

To make everything crystal clear, let's go through all the options you currently have to ride attractions at the resort. Here we go:

    • As stated previously, you can purchase the Disney Genie+ Service each morning for access to the Lightning Lane at select attractions. You will be able to choose one park or a multi-park option (in case you have the Park Hopper Option on your ticket). Currently, all Guests who have purchased this service can make their first reservation at 7 a.m.
    • You can also purchase up to 2 Individual Lighting Lanes per day, which will get you access to the Lightning Lane at the most popular attractions at the resort. If you are staying at a Disney Resorts Collection Hotel, you can begin to purchase these at 7 a.m. All other Guests will need to wait until the opening time of the park at which the attraction they are looking to ride is located.
    • You can wait in the standby queue for most attractions at the resort. Currently, 2 attractions do not have a standby option. These are Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT and TRON Lightcycle / Run Presented by Enterprise at Magic Kingdom Park. To ride these attractions without purchasing an Individual Lightning Lane, you can try for a spot in the Virtual Queue at 7 a.m. from anywhere through the My Disney Experience mobile app or at 1 p.m. if you're in the park at which the attraction is located. You can only be enrolled in 1 Virtual Queue at a time and cannot get in the same Virtual Queue more than once a day.
    • You can use all of these options, none of them, or a combination of them. It really is up to you!
Juli, I also want to let you know that these options can and do change from time to time. In fact, Disney teased that they were going to make some changes to the Disney Genie+ Service in 2024 to allow Guests to reserve Lightning Lanes ahead of time. So the moral of the story? Follow along with the Disney Parks Blog leading up to your trip for any updates or changes.

I promise this is less complicated than it sounds and you'll get the hang of it quickly! I love to use these services when I'm at the resort as they save me a lot of time. If you have any other questions, I'm here to help.
